Bring Your Kids' Department Back to Life in Time for Back to School!

Once again back to school time is quickly upon us, and that makes this the perfect time to punch up your kids’ furniture department. Often retailers worry that youth departments don’t get enough foot traffic because they are usually located off to the side or near the back. Fear not, furniture and accessories used to deck out children's rooms are often considered destination items, and this time of the year will bring in good foot traffic. So spruce up the appearance of your department and put your best foot forward for the upcoming season. Here are a couple of helpful tips to bring any kids’ department back to life:

Here a theme, there a theme: Using a theme is a great way to add spark and imagination to children's furniture settings.  Themed murals and decals that dress up walls are the best way to achieve a high impact look. Themed graphics can range from gender neutral to work with different styles of furniture, to specific and demographically appealing.  Just make sure to consider the accessories and top of bed available in your selection when deciding which themes to go with.

Color capture: Changing the wall colors in your kids’ department is a quick and cost-effective way to rejuvenate the area.  Choose colors that will best coordinate with the most current accessories that decorate your space. This will ensure some longevity with your color choice and create a cohesive look, as well as encourage add-on sales with the accessories. In addition to purchasing the displayed accessories, customers often fall in love with the coordinated room setting and may ask for the paint color to finish the look of their furniture purchase.

Accessorize to glamorize: Take a look at your current youth accessories and consider if they are up to date or need some refreshing. Often old accessories, such as lamps, artwork, and top of bed, tend to haunt bedroom settings if they are not sold. Chances are if they are outdated they won’t be selling anytime soon. Older accessories can also dull down a display making it less appealing.  Consider bringing in a fresh selection of accessories that will dress up your settings and inspire your customers.

Be shifty: Sometimes shifting your merchandise around will make the area look new again. Customers get used to seeing the same items in certain locations. So even if you aren’t featuring new product, changing up the locations will make people think your department has been revamped. This also gives you a chance to breathe new life into a setting with different accessories and experimenting with different placement angles.
