Creating the Customer Experience

Creating a memorable experience for customers is the best way to stand out from the crowd and keep them coming back.  You are able to leave your mark on their mental marketplace, thereby creating return customers and hopefully new ones through positive word of mouth. What goes into creating the customer experience?

Here are 4 ways to impact an interior for a positive experience:

Engage as many of the 5 senses as possible. Experiences involving sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch create memories that can last a long time, possibly a lifetime. Compare that to basic thoughts or opinions about an experience which can fade within hours. Here are different ways to engage the senses in your interior:

  • Use impactful, vibrant graphics to catch the eye
  • Allow customers to touch the products, or use textural finishes that provide tactile interest
  • Utilize different types of sounds or scents for different galleries or branded spaces within a store to make them stand out
  • Small, well-placed bowls of themed candies or treats can trigger a taste memory without leaving large messes

Make it unique by incorporating elements specific to you and your brand.  You don’t want to look like everyone else.  Market penetration of some products can be pretty heavy, but a unique interior that creates a stronger experience will make YOUR merchandise stand out.

Surprise the customer with unexpected elements. This can be as simple as a bold color choice on an accent wall, an avant-garde wall texture, or an artful ceiling fixture. Even small surprises thoughtfully placed will leave a lasting impression.

Repeat your successful design elements to provide a comfortable consistency for customers. Especially between multiple storefronts, a level of consistency will help to repeat the messaging and branding in a customer's mind showing them that they are shopping with the same trusted company. This can be done by repeating color palettes and materials, as well as signage and POP applications
